Recreation at Picuris

Picuris offers a beautiful well-stocked fishing pond not far from our Visitor's Center where permits are available. Outdoor enthusiasts can spend the day trout fishing at the Pu-na Pond. Visitors can call the Picurís Pueblo Parks & Wildlife Department at (505) 587-0110. Have some fun and maybe catch a big one! Or hike along the Rio Pueblo River a stone's throw away. Take a break and have a picnic lunch in our picnic areas by the pond or river. You can also take the self-guided walking tour of ancient ruins up on the hilltop overlooking our village. The natural beauty of the "hidden valley" is striking and provides a secluded getaway into nature and history.

Picuris has slowly built up it's bison herd from one animal, a pregnant cow, acquired in 1991. The pueblo is one of the five northern New Mexico pueblos that keep herds.  They all work cooperatively to establish new blood lines.  One bull weighs more than 2,000 pounds. Not far away, you can take a stroll to see the herd up close, or get a guided tour arranged through the Visitor's Center.
